Dr. Bhupen Barman obtained his MBBS degree in 1999 from Guwahati Medical College, Assam, and his MD in General Medicine from Assam Medical College and Hospital. He completed senior resident training in cardiology at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, and neurology at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS), Delhi. He subsequently joined the faculty at Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), New Delhi, and later at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong. Dr. Barman is a Professor and the Head of General Medicine at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Guwahati, where he also serves as the Member Secretary of the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC). He has been awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Indian College of Physicians (FICP) for his outstanding academic performance.
In his role at AIIMS Guwahati, Dr. Barman is dedicated to teaching and guiding general medicine undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students. His research focuses on infectious diseases, rheumatology, and metabolic diseases. He is actively involved in patient care and has received research grants from prominent national and international agencies, including ICMR, AIIMS, and NUS Singapore. Currently, two MD students are working under his direct supervision.
Dr. Barman is a principal investigator (PI) and co-investigator (Co-PI) on multiple collaborative research projects. He has published over 150 research articles across all disciplines of internal medicine in national and international indexed journals. He is a life member of several esteemed professional associations, including the Association of Physicians of India (API), the American College of Physicians (ACP), the Indian Rheumatology Association (IRA), the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and the Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research (ISAR). Additionally, he is a member of international societies such as the HSS International Study Group and the COVAD Study Group, contributing to high-impact journal publications in collaboration.
